Tour Bennett’s boho nursery! I challenged myself to makeover Bennett’s room in one month, with a budget of $0. What started as a white box with leftovers from Edison’s nautical nursery transformed into a bright, cozy space with boho flair that fits Bennett’s sunshiny personality.
With all of the other home renovation projects on our list, I knew I didn’t have any budget to go out and buy new things, so I challenged myself to DIY as much as I could, thrift shop, and reuse things from other parts of the house.
I rearranged the furniture, put up shelves that we already had, and swapped around pillows and rugs. I put up thrifted curtains that used to be in our master bedroom and cleaned out the closet. Then I added the three boho DIY projects I’ll show you below as the finishing touches.
The only thing this room is missing is some macrame – don’t you think? If I try to make some, would you like a DIY tutorial for it? Let me know in the comments below!

Step 1: Painting the Paneling White
We had to start with a clean canvas. As much as I would have loved to tear out the paneling, that would have been biting off a little more than we could chew. So before we moved in this summer, I painted two coats of Benjamin Moore’s Chantilly Lace, a very bright white. The room felt massively bigger, and the walls reflected so much more sunlight!
Step 2: Installing Shelves
These white rail system shelves were actually installed over the door that leads to our bedroom closet, the door that’s now behind Bennett’s dresser. We’d taken them down before painting, and now months later, they were just gathering dust. I reinstalled them in the blank wall space next to the rocking chair with the thought of keeping books there to read to Bennett.
As you’ll see in the video, installing the shelves was a bit more difficult than it should have been. I installed the rails backward, so the shelf supports wouldn’t go in. I had to take them back down and flip them around, and then it worked perfectly!
Step 3: Rearranging the furniture
Of course, after I installed the shelves, I realized that the awkwardness of Edison’s teepee could be fixed by switching it around with the rocking chair. I’m fine with the new layout because I don’t see the teepee in Bennett’s room long term. When he’s older, I’ll switch it out for a little table and chairs.
Step 4: Adding DIY Boho Decor
In the video tutorial below, I’ll show you how I made the fiber art yarn rainbow wall hanging, a painted rainbow wall hanging, and an easy crib sheet!
As it turned out, the only money I spent on the room makeover was on the fiber art rainbow, but it was TOTALLY worth it. It’s my favorite thing in his room!
A couple of things I would do differently next time I make one: not use hot glue to attach the strands together! LOL. I ordered an upholstery needle, but it didn’t come in time. Next time I’ll sew the strands together on the back and reinforce with a thicker wire to help them hold their shape.
Supplies You’ll Need For Boho DIYs:
- Cotton rope for the fiber art rainbow
- This set of yarn would give you a lot of color options to choose from!
- Upholstery needle for sewing the rainbow
- Dropcloth for the wall hanging
- Stick or dowel for the wall hanging
- Fabric in the color or pattern of your choice for the crib sheet
- Elastic
