How can you find the motivation or energy to take care of yourself when it just feels like another thing on your to-do list? In this video, we’ll talk about self-care changes you can make in YOUR ENVIRONMENT. Read part 1, “Taking Care of YOU,” here.
1. Make Something
Make art or a craft project. Painting, sewing, or any type of DIY project for a few hours is so refreshing for my creativity and state of mind.
Just don’t make it stressful by trying to take on a big project as a Christmas present.
2. Read something light
Put aside the heftier books and turn off the TV, and just unplug with good old fashioned glossy pages or a good novel. I love looking at all the beautiful decorating and recipe ideas in Better Homes and Gardens and Good Housekeeping.
3. Quick clean
When you’re low on energy, your environment can quickly deteriorate. Which in turn makes you feel worse, and overwhelmed.
This is a game-changer – set a timer for 15 minutes, and work on one room. A bathroom disaster, a kitchen explosion, a laundry-room mountain – it’s much more manageable in 15 minute chunks. You’ll be shocked by how much you can accomplish in a focused 15 minutes.
4. De-clutter something small
Outer order equals inner calm. Tackle a small space that’s bugging you – like a shelf or a drawer, and enjoy the feeling of accomplishment afterward! Use that 15-minute timer again and you’ll be surprised by how much you can do!
5. Virtual coffee date
Some human interaction will boost your mood, and lift both of your spirits.
6. Bake
The concentration it takes is soothing, plus, you’ll have treats to share afterward!
7. Get some fresh flowers or a plant
Adding some greenery and life to your environment in the winter will do wonders.
8. Light candles
Embrace the darker days by taking the opportunity to add cozy lighting around your house.
9. Get a sunlight lamp
I received this one from Christmas, after my therapist suggested trying it out. There are so many options to chose from on Amazon at all sizes and price points!
10. Rearrange your space
When I’m feeling stuck or in a run, moving furniture around can really shake things up! I recently moved my couches and chairs around downstairs, which led to moving the console and TV and toys and art… it was on ongoing project! Now that everything is finally settled, I love the new arrangement!
