Let’s tackle kitchen decluttering! It’s been a work in progress that started before we moved in, and I’m continuing to tweak things even after a year of living here. Which is normal – the more you use a space, the more you learn your own workflow and what works best for you.
Today we’ll declutter and organize under the kitchen sink as well as some problem drawers, like the kitchen utensils, Tupperware, and silverware.
I’m also explaining my organizational method in this video: S.P.A.C.E. Sort, Purge, Assign, Contain, and Evaluate. You can use this method on more than just decluttering your kitchen!

In From Clutter to Clarity, we spend an entire week decluttering the kitchen. We go through all “eating” things, dishes, utensils, glasses, etc. Then we spend a day on “baking” and food prep items. Then a day going through the pantry, one day going through the fridge and freezer, and wrap up with all the “consumable” items in the kitchen, like paper products, plastic wrap, plastic bags, napkins, etc.
It’s amazing how much time and space you can save with some smart changes in the kitchen. For example, used to have a big stack of ugly plastic plates and bowls for the boys. Then I realized that our Correlle dishes were practically unbreakable, and the salad and bread plates were actually the right size for the boys. I donated all those plastic dishes and haven’t missed them at all! I’d love to replace the plastic silverware and cups too, so let me know if you know of any good replacements!
Gadgets that only do one thing, or dishes that you use only once a year, are taking up valuable space and cluttering up your drawers and cabinets.
Besides, fewer dishes means fewer dishes to wash! I’ve heard from several families who say they have just enough dishes for a meal, and that way, they have to wash them immediately afterward for the next meal. The sink is never full of dirty dishes that way!
