Organizing a small bathroom can be tricky – combining both functional and also make it good-looking. It’s a struggle I’m well acquainted with, since both bathrooms in our house are pretty tight on space, especially for storage!
After giving our half bathroom downstairs a makeover and re-organizing the upstairs full bathroom in my recent video, here are five tips for balancing pretty and practical:
1. Don’t be afraid to go dark.
We used to think that dark colors in a small space was bad – but actually, sometimes if you just embrace the dark side wholeheartedly, it actually makes your space feel bigger! I’m so glad I opted to paint all four walls AND the ceiling navy blue in our downstairs bathroom. When only one wall was painted dark, your eyes stopped there. Now that it’s all dark, the walls and ceiling fade away. And there’s nothing wrong with going for a cozy, moody aesthetic like we did in here!
2. Pare down your products.
When your storage space is limited, every product you store in your bathroom has to work hard. Any products that are expired, you haven’t used in ages, or you just don’t like, have got to go! Check your expiration dates, and be ruthless with what you allow to take up your precious bathroom space!
3. Go matchy-matchy.
The last time I decluttered and organized the bathroom, my system was functional, but it still felt cluttered. I realized it looked cluttered because my containers were mostly mismatched and also clear, which allowed me to see in. When I re-organized in this video, I decided to upgrade my storage to matching, stackable containers that are white or gray. It made a huge difference!
4. Decant it.
It might be an extra step, but decanting your soaps, lotions, and shampoos into uniform bottles gives an instant spa feeling! I used these amber pump bottles from Amazon – you’ll see how it turned out in the video 🙂
5. Re-evaluate your system.
It’s been almost exactly one year since our first makeover of the upstairs bathroom when we installed the floor tiles and switched out hardware. And that was probably a year after my first ever bathroom decluttering video. All that to say, sometimes you can’t just fix it and forget it. You need to live with it for a while to see what works for you and what doesn’t. Life shifts over time, and your systems will need to shift with it.
I’ve got two bathroom projects in this video! First, we’re going to give the downstairs half bathroom a moody, elegant makeover by painting all the walls and the ceiling! Next, I’m re-evaluating my organizing system in our family bathroom upstairs and with the help of some new storage and labels, giving it an upgrade! If you’re looking for a bathroom makeover, decluttering, and organizing inspiration, I hope you enjoy this video! Let me know in the comments, would you ever paint a ceiling this dark?
