The Minimal-ish Mama

8 Fashion Tips I Learned This Week

in DIY, Style on 03/23/11

Maybe it’s because spring is in the air. Maybe it’s because we got our tax refund back, or because I cleaned out my closet. It could be because my mom suggested I make an appointment with a style and wardrobe consultant.

Whatever the reason, I’ve been drawn to blog posts, articles, and live chats about fashion this week, and I’ve learned A LOT. It all started with an email from The Frugal Living Community on Blog Frog, announcing their Twitter party and a live chat. For those of you who are not social media moguls, Twitter parties are when we all tweet back and forth discussing questions from the host of the party, and every tweet contains a hashtag (#) with the subject of the party. A live chat on Blog Frog works just like MSN instant messenger. Both are fun, and they give out fabulous prizes. In fact, I won the grand prize of this crossover bag!

PB and J Boutique, $49.99

I think they picked me because I said this bag is a great improvement on the fanny pack. Or because I mentioned I only own two purses, one for spring and summer, and one for fall and winter.

At both of these virtual parties, we discussed current trends, how we were incorporating them (or not), and shared tips and ideas on how we made fashion frugal.

Now, I’m not the most up to speed fashionwise. Some of these may be old news to you, but I have a feeling I’m not the only fashionably challenged out there! So without further ado, here’s what I learned last week:

1. Flared Jeans Are Back (but skinnies are still in)

Some of you may be cheering, but when I found this out, I was crestfallen. I just embraced the skinny jean trend. Here in AZ, and from what I’ve seen of California, everyone wears skinny jeans, regardless of size or shape. So I finally decided to try on a pair, and loved them! And now I find out I’m just a little behind. The experts and designers agree, 70’s flared high waisted jeans are already on the market. The good news is that flares flatter everyone, and skinny jeans aren’t going anywhere…yet.

2. The 70’s Have Returned (in a 2011 sort of way)
I had an inkling that this was happening, and now it’s been confirmed. Good news for you if you liked them the first time around, and still have some wide legged pants and floppy hats hanging around.

3. You Can Mix Brown and Black
And brown and grey, as it turns out. Check out this post from Already Pretty on how to mix neutrals.

4. Pink is Hot
Honeysuckle pink, actually. It’s been named “Color of the Year” by Pantone, replacing the turquoise of last year. It’s a bright pink, “Courageous. Confident. Vital. A brave new color, for a brave new world. Let the bold spirit of Honeysuckle infuse you, lift you and carry you through the year. It’s a color for every day with nothing “everyday” about it,” they say.

5. Wedges and Chunky Jewelry Are In
Unfortunate for me, because I don’t really like either. I have a strong aversion to heels, although I’ve been told wedges are much easier to walk in.

Forever 21. I actually don’t mind this pair so much!

I don’t know if a ring like this is very practical for me, but it is pretty.

6. Always Buy What Fits Now, Not What You Hope Will Fit Later
I’m all for being optimistic, but when shopping, that’s dangerous. If you don’t want to be potentially wasting your time and money, buy what fits you now. After all, if you do loose those extra pounds, many times you can get it taken in.

7. Envision Three Outfits With it Before Buying It
This little tip will revolutionalize the way I shop, helping me make the most of my purchases and stay away from impulsive and repeat buys. I don’t know about you, but I tend to buy items I like, and get home to discover I don’t have anything to wear with it. Then I have to buy more so that I can wear the first item. If I stopped to assess what I already have, I can build off of it instead of around a new piece. I learned this from an article on Already Pretty about Shopping Pitfalls and How to Avoid Them. There’s several more good tips in that article too.

8. We All Learn By Imitating
I learned this from one of my textbooks actually. Aristotle says:

“Imitation is natural to man from childhood…he is the most imitative creature in the world, and learns at first by imitation. And it is also natural for all to delight in works of imitation.”

– Poetics

When you think about it, we learn to speak by imitating what we hear, we learned to write by tracing letters. Fashion, at it’s core, is imitation. That’s why the same styles are cycled and re-cycled over and over.

Fashion sense isn’t something you’re born with, it’s something learned – through imitation.

This brings hope and a challenge. Hope in that I, and you too,  can dress in an attractive and confident manner even if it’s not natural to us. Challenge, because we have to choose who to imitate.

As believers, we need to take every thought captive, so that we don’t fall prey to the world’s lies that we have to look a certain way, or we’ll be unloved. We must remember that the world values outward appearances only, but God looks on the heart, where true beauty lies.

What’s your philosophy on fashion? What have you learned about fashion lately? Do you have any tips to share with us?

Thank you for sharing this! I feel that I am a complete fashion dunce. I do a good job of pretty much getting the same types of clothing and just wearing that. I would like to branch out a bit, but I honestly don't know where to start! Do you have any other suggestions of good style (but not too haute couture or crazy out there) blogs or websites?

Yes I do! I've just discovered the world of fashion blogs, but I'm not into crazy or expensive. I'll blog about them soon!

Great post! I love Twitter parties too, they are so fun. Yay for me, I found a pair of wedges that look just like the ones pictured at the Goodwill for $4. I guess I made one correct purchase already for the year. LOL.

I am visiting from WFMW. Stop by and say hi anytime. I love new visitors.

I love this post and will be sharing it in my FB!

I love tip#7! I will forever remember that. Sometimes, I just get so excited and buy clothes that I would actually rarely wear. Such a waste, right?

I'm with you on skinny jeans.. I love them too so I'm not sure I'm buying flared jeans anytime soon! =p

And i definitely love love love 70's look!

Love this post =D (didn't I say that in the beginning of my comment? hahahha)

Love this! I'm so glad to see that you won the bag too!! I'm big on the only buy/keep what fits you *now* advice. I had been holding on to too small clothes for too long. I finally parted ways with them. I may not have the body I want, but it's what I have so I need to work it 🙂
As far as wedges, I've seen some that are only like a 1-2 inch wedge heel, maybe start with something small like that.

As a stay-at-home mom, I literally stay in my pajamas a lot of the time. When I do get dressed, I have a nice mix of career wear (from my old job) and maternity shirts (from my pregnancy) that don't look like maternity shirts. So, I need a lot of help myself. Those maternity shirts that are cute come in real handy all the time. Great post! (The Forever 21 pictures gave me a flashback though, because I worked there during a summer in college. I thought it would be fun to dress up with Amish attire one day to man the dressing rooms. Maybe I'm just weird.) Thanks for accommodating this comment. 🙂

I think this post was for me.

Did your research come across what to do with your clothes from Jr. High??

I so need a wardrobe makeover ASAP. My hubby will disagree though. Something about $$ or whatever. 😉

And I totally laughed when I read "my mom suggested I make an appointment with a style and wardrobe consultant". That is pure awesomeness… and love.

    Can't wait to read more!!

Ahh! I'm SO excited that the flared jeans are back in! I LOVE them! I'm not gonna lie… I never quit wearing them. 😉 I too have just embraced the skinny jeans (like this past February, haha!) so I'm glad that they aren't going anywhere. 🙂

Great tips. It's also helped me to know what colors are best on me and not purchase the others no matter how cute it looks.

I've always thought you were fashionable…but then again, I have NO idea what's in style…and honestly, I don't really care. If I like it, it's in style. After all, I'm the one buying it, right? And my husband is the only one I really need to impress–it it meets his seal of approval, then it's good enough for me :-D.

That being said, I'm glad I can wear my high waisted flare jeans again 😀

I almost didn't post the video of our main floor b I almost didn't post the video of our main floor bathroom, because it isn't "done." But how silly is that? Is any house project ever really "done" anyway? 😂

It's come a long way, thanks to the magic of paint and peel & stick wallpaper. I would love your ideas for improving it more!

I think a brass shower curtain rod is a must, but what about painting the ceiling blue? Peel and stick tile?

Less = More! In “Why Parents are Drowning in T Less = More!

In “Why Parents are Drowning in Toys,” an article from Box, “US toy sales jumped from $22.3 billion in 2019 to $26 billion in 2020, and then to $30.1 billion in 2021 …”

BILLIONS.

And in a study from the early 2000s, average middle class homes had 139 toys visible, with countless more hidden away. 😳

If your kids struggle to pick up, it could be that there are just too many toys. It could also be that there isn’t a clear home for the toys. Or a combination of both!

Have your 🥧 and eat it too! Minimalism isn’t Have your 🥧 and eat it too! Minimalism isn’t just about having less.

It’s about CHOOSING less, to have MORE.

Less impulse spending, MORE saving for vacation.

Less stuff to manage, MORE free time.

For us, homeschooling this year has meant less of a lot of things - like alone time, work, going to the store by myself, to name a few - but it’s also meant more conversations, more unstructured play, more baking 🤣

This is why minimalism won’t look the same for anyone. You have to choose the things that enrich your life, and say no to the rest.

What’s something you’re choosing less of in this season of life?

It doesn’t have to cost a lot to get organized!# It doesn’t have to cost a lot to get organized!#springcleaning

The only thing I bought to make our back door entryway more functional was a larger rug. I re-purposed shoe racks and hangers I already had.

What made all the difference was taking a few minutes to pull everything out and discover just how much was cluttering up the closet, and get rid of it!

Now we each have three pairs of shoes down here (snow boots/sandals, tennis shoes, rain boots for the boys, slippers, boots and sneakers for me, sneakers, work boots, and slippers for Brian).

🏠 What’s one small space in your home that you just need to spend a little time on making more functional?

Six months 🎀 Six months 🎀
Edison complained ALL DAY about our plan to see th Edison complained ALL DAY about our plan to see the Glimmer Lights at @fenimorefarmcv after Christmas - he didn’t want to go outside, he didn’t want to ride in the car for that long, etc.etc.etc.

But after we parked and started unloading the stroller, he came around the side of the car and announced: “I’ve decided that since I’m here, I’m going to enjoy it.”

And he proceeded to have a wonderful time 😂

That statement sums up how I feel about winter. 🥶

Instead of dreading it and being miserable for four, five? months, since I’m here, I might as well enjoy it!

In case you’re a fellow SAD sufferer (Seasonal Affective Disorder) here’s a few things that are helping:

1. Going outside, even for a few minutes. I never want to, but we have had so much fun having nighttime snowball fights, skating on the frozen swamp, or just sitting and watching birds. It’s hard, but worth it!

2. Drinking copious amounts of hot tea and hot chocolate. Bonus points for thrifting a cool mug for the occasion!

3. Wearing comfy clothes. I know everyone has been doing it since 2020 but I bought myself a matching sweatshirt and sweatpants for Christmas and now I’m ruined because I never want to wear real clothes again 🤣

4. Shamelessly hurkle durkling. The Scottish word means something like “to lie in bed after you should have gotten up.” I’m nap trapped, okay?!

5. Get the gear. I bought winter gloves that actually keep my hands warm (life changing). Last year I bought snow pants, and now I’m on the lookout for a good winter coat (my zipper broke) and snow boots that don’t cost an arm and a leg!

It’s amazing how much more enjoyable winter is when you dress for it 🤣

Any tips for getting through the cold and gray days?
Happy Betwixmas! I just learned that that’s what Happy Betwixmas! I just learned that that’s what they call this liminal period between Christmas and New Year’s in England, and I think we need to make it a thing.

After a quiet and slow Christmas at home, I’m now staying up until 1am, sleeping until noon, reading, and playing too much Zelda.

In past years, I spent this time journaling, making vision boards, charts, and goal setting to prepare for the new year. But I just don’t have that kind of energy anymore 🤣

You’re probably already getting bombarded with “New Year, New You!” messages, and while a small part of me feels like I “should” be posting decluttering tips and before and after transformations, I also feel “betwixt.”

Betwixt the past version of myself, and the new chapter slowly unfolding. After each of my babies, I birthed a new version of myself, marked by paradigm shifts in my career, my home - and less visible changes in my dreams, perspective, and beliefs. After the confusion of matresence, I find a new purpose and direction.

I trust that this will happen again, in time. The page of the next chapter will turn. I’ll find a new direction or rediscover joy in an old one. And in the meantime, I’ll enjoy the in-between, the small moments of everyday beauty.
