How do you know if you have too much stuff? That’s our topic today in part three of our From Clutter to Clarity series. Watch the video below for five signs you might have too much stuff:
1. If picking up after your family is a part-time job
With less stuff, cleaning takes so much less time! I mentioned in my first video, in this series, it’s estimated that we spend an hour a day just looking for stuff. We talk a lot these days about the lingering inequality of housework, the fact that women still do the majority of housework even when they work outside the home.
We’ll talk more about working with your spouse and kids in the next two videos, but it’s also important to note that the burden for maintaining your home shouldn’t all fall on you. Even if you’re a stay-at-home mom, the rest of your family lives there too. It might take some modeling on your part, and finding a system that works, but it is possible to teach your family to pitch in and take responsibility.
2. If cleaning takes all weekend and it still never feels done
Like I said in an earlier video in this series, 40% of housework could be eliminated with decluttering! Although it might feel like you’ll never catch up right now, by starting with one small task each day, you can learn to create an efficient cleaning system to work throughout the week, so it doesn’t all depend on the weekend.
3. If having your kids pick up their toys feels like World War III
My oldest son is four, and I can tell he has too many toys available if he can’t pick up his stuff in five minutes or less.
If cleaning up is a constant struggle, your kid’s probably could be that he or she just has too much stuff. It’s too overwhelming to deal with it, and maybe it’s not even really clear where things belong.
Narrowing the available toys will not only make it a million times easier for your kids to put their stuff away, but they’ll also play better, more deeply, and more independently!
4. If last-minute company is your worst nightmare
Creating a home-maintenance streamlined system allows you to be ready and not embarrassed by last-minute visitors. It also opens up new opportunities for you to serve others without worrying about being judged and thus focusing on yourself. You can focus your energy on making others feel comfortable and welcome.
5. If you’ve just given up
Don’t give up! If your home has been chaotic for a long time, it’s not going to be fixed overnight. You’ve got to change your mindset, and build new habits. Also, they don’t teach this stuff in school! Most of our parents probably never taught us to tidy. But there are skills you can learn to help you declutter and organize; things like decision making, focus, and systems.
It doesn’t have to be this way! There’s hope!
In my course, we’ll talk through all of that, deal with guilt around getting rid of things, find a pace that works, taking it one step at a time. Plus, you’ll have the support of a group of likeminded moms doing it together!
